Scheduling a Telehealth Appointment

Vortex Physical Therapy and Balance is excited to offer telehealth visits to our patients as an alternative to coming to the clinic for treatment. During the local shelter in place for Covid-19, this is the safest way for us to provide treatment for issues related to balance and dizziness.

Telehealth appointments are virtual visits, between you and your physical therapist, on a secure, HIPAA compliant live video platform. To participate in these appointments, you will need a smart phone, tablet or computer with internet access, a camera and a speaker.

Once your appointment is scheduled, you will receive an email confirmation with a URL link to your appointment. On your first visit, please prepare to sign-in five minutes early. The software we use will assist you by asking to turn on your camera and guide you into your therapist’s virtual waiting room until your scheduled appointment time.

Although there are some tests we can only conduct in the office, there are numerous vestibular and balance tests and exercises to share through telehealth. If you are at high risk for falls, we require another member of the family or a caregiver be available to assist you. Your safety is our number one concern. If at any point in the process, we determine it is unsafe for you to participate in telehealth, we will discuss what other options are available for you.

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth is a live, one-on-one video appointment with a medical provider, such as your physical therapist. Connected over the internet using a secure technology platform, telehealth visits require the use of a smartphone, tablet or computer with a camera to participate.

There are very few differences between a telehealth visit and attending therapy in-person.  You will still receive a comprehensive evaluation, as well as education and home exercises to facilitate your recovery from balance and issues.

How do I know if Telehealth is right for me?

Please contact our office at 408-540-7622 to speak with someone about your current health concerns and discuss whether telehealth is a good option for you. We are here to answer your questions and come up with a therapy plan that feels right to you. If you start physical therapy using telehealth and decide it isn’t going to work, no problem. Just let our office know and we can schedule you for in-person sessions with your therapist once they are available.

How can I schedule a Telehealth visit?

What equipment do I need?

Telehealth visits are conducted through a live video chat. You will need internet access and a camera on one of the following devices: desktop, laptop, smartphone or tablet.

Is Telehealth difficult to use?

No, actually the process is straightforward and requires only a few steps. Once your appointment is scheduled, you will receive an email confirmation containing a URL link for your appointment. To join your scheduled appointment, click on the URL link in our email a few minutes beforehand to join the session with your physical therapist. We will also provide a step-by-step guide showing you how to log-in

May I request my regular physical therapist?

Yes, if you have been to Vortex Physical Therapy and Balance before, we will schedule you with your regular physical therapist. If this is not an option, we will let you know before scheduling.

Does my insurance cover telehealth visits?

Yes, in response to the Covid-19 epidemic, Medicare and most major private insurance companies have now authorized payment for telehealth services to a broader scope of health care providers, including physical therapists. We are monitoring this and will notify patients if something changes.

If I don’t want to do telehealth, can I be scheduled at the clinic?

Our office is following the current guidelines of Santa Clara County to prevent the spread of Covid-19. We are limiting in-person visits to people with urgent issues requiring in-person treatment, such as BPPV. Please call to speak with our office manager to see whether your situation applies. If you want to  start therapy in the clinic after the shelter in place is lifted, please call to be added to the wait list and we will call you as soon as we start scheduling regular appointments again.
