We are excited to participate in Balance Awareness Week again this year. This event takes place every September in conjunction with the first day of Fall, which is Thursday, September 21. Over the next week, we’ll share information on how to prevent falls and highlight the benefits of balance therapy.
A few sobering statistics:
- 1 in 4 Americans over the age of 65 falls each year.
- Every 11 seconds an older adult enters is treated in the ER for a fall.
- Every 19 minutes an older adult dies from a fall.
- After a fall, some older adults become fearful and avoid social activities, rather than risk falling. This can result in isolation and depression.
People assume falls are a normal part of aging. While they are common, falls are definitely not normal and can be prevented. There are things older adults can do to stay safe, active and independent. Check out this National Council on Aging video highlighting several things you can do to prevent a fall. (Note: number one is to find a balance program)
Let’s work together to prevent falls.
Our goal at Vortex Physical Therapy and Balance is to help older adults in our community improve their balance while decreasing risk of falls through 1:1 physical therapy. Balance therapy provides the tools to improve your balance and avoid falls, instilling confidence to resume an active daily routine. For those who wish to maintain their balance, we also offer a weekly exercise class.
Community balance classes are great for those who want to be more active and prevent falls. Classes offered at local community centers may include general balance exercises, Tai Chi, Qigong, or Pilates. Our weekly class includes a combination of balance and strength exercises, yoga and Pilates.
If you live in or around San Jose, please contact our office if you would like a balance evaluation. Balance therapy is covered by Medicare and secondary insurances under your physical therapy benefits. You do not need a referral from your doctor to come in for an evaluation, but it is recommended. Our 10-week exercise class is on Thursdays from 1:00-2:00 pm and starts back up soon. Contact us for details.
